George Campbell

George Campbell was born in 1917 in Arklow, County Wicklow, although he spent his formative years in Belfast. He was a self-taught artist and began painting in 1941 and was a close associate of Dillon and O'Neill.

During the forties Campbell exhibited in several group shows in Belfast, Dublin, and London. He first exhibited at the RHA in Dublin in 1947, and was represented in nearly every show for the next thirty years. In 1954, he became an associate of the RHA, and in 1964 he was made a full member.

In 1951, Campbell visited Spain for the first time and returned nearly every year subsequently. He also exhibited in Spain on many occasions, the last such show being in Malaga in 1973. A fluent Spanish speaker, the Spanish Government made him a Knight Commander of Spain.

Campbell painted a variety of landscapes, particularly of the West of Ireland and Spain, and also worked in stained glass. He died in Dublin in 1979 and is buried in Glendalough, Co. Wicklow.
